Privelege Garaba “I came across to the UK six years ago from Zimbabwe with my family. We were living in Edinburgh in a small flat in the city centre. It was tough as we have three young children and they had nowhere to play.

We moved to Gateshead a few months ago as I wanted to study nursing at Northumbria University. Two Castles has provided us with a much bigger semi detached home with a front and back garden. We are not isolated anymore and we have good neighbours and a real community environment around us.

Since the move, we have more money as the rent is cheaper, so this Christmas will be really special and the children will be getting more than they normally would.”

“I used to live in a semi detached house but because of ill health I struggled to get up the stairs and needed full time care. I moved to the sheltered accommodation, thanks to Two Castles, over three and a half years ago. It was the best thing I ever did. It’s given me a new lease of life and restored all my confidence.

I have the independence of my own flat, but there is also a communal lounge where we play games and chat to one another. I have so many new friends and really look forward to the social nights. Sometimes we play bingo or get together for coffee mornings.

I take the lift to my top floor flat I like to call it the penthouse! I have my own kitchen and bathroom, but always know that there is someone around if ever I need help. It’s totally changed my life.”

Margaret Rawes I was nervous living in a three bedroom house after my husband died. I’d lived there for nearly 50 years. I was also lonely and my health began to deteriorate. I moved into the sheltered accommodation exactly a year ago and it has been a huge sense of relief and a wonderful feeling of security.

I have help on hand twenty four hours a day and just need to pull a cord in my flat whenever I need assistance. The Two Castles warden is around to take care of any problems.

My children have noticed how my health has improved since living here and knowing that this is my home for the foreseeable future is of great comfort to me.”
